In Seeds to Plants, Smudge plants some sunflower seeds in her garden, and children need to choose the weather each day to help the seeds grow into tall, healthy plants with flowers.
Seeds to Plants enables children to discover that plants need to be watered regularly and kept away from the cold. As a simulation activity, children see the results of their own decisions – if the wrong choices are made, the sunflowers can die from being exposed to the cold, or too much sun will make the plants wilts. If children make the correct choices, their seeds will grow into large beautiful flowers!
The activity starts with Smudge planting some sunflower seeds in the brown patch of earth. Children select one of the types of weather from the right of the screen for each day. To do this, children tap on one of the weather symbols, and drag it to the sky before letting it go. The day is then completed, and they will see how the seeds have grown with that weather choice.
Children will be able to view a chart showing the choices made on each day. There is a reporting option to enable children’s progress to be checked by a teacher or a parent. Seeds to Plants has on-screen instructions, audio help and the ability to include a “measuring stick” which will enable the height of the plants to be measured each day. It works in English and Spanish, which has the additional benefit of helping children with their second language!
Seeds to Plants is part of a series of science apps from Storm Educational, whose apps and software have been widely used in schools and at home over many years. More information about Storm Educational is available on our website www.stormeducational.co.uk, or on twitter @stormeducational
Seeds to Plants is a great way to introduce children to how plants survive and what happens to them under different weather conditions. It is the perfect way of introducing the concepts of growing plants and getting kids out in the garden!
